He thanked her again when she brought him his water ration at midday, and once more in the evening when he'd finished his second cartful of food. By the third time, Valeria came to realize this murmured gratitude was as close to an apology as she would get from the giant.
Her fear of his crushing strength was slowly being replaced by a new curiosity. For the first time, he showed something other than blind fury. It was strange, entering the chamber from the main doors rather than the stairway, Valeria thought. The doors were opened wide by a mechanism in the hillside, a sign that Ross had been let out for the day. The dungeon looked infinitely more huge without its titanic prisoner.
